For quite some time I have been in the process of selling my beloved pair of Technics 1210 Mk3 decks/turntables (depending on your preference of terminology).
For a very, very, very long time they have been doing that common used phrase of ‘gathering dust’ and not being used at all. The same goes for my vinyl which spans trance, hard house, hardstyle and some techno. Sitting doing nothing, completely and utterly pointless…so I have decided very soon they shall be sold. I have been saying this for more than a year, so who knows, next year I may still be saying this all over again
That is why I’d like to bring to attention this following article posted last month on Mixmag.net by Nick Stevenson, it is titled ‘Is there ever a time to sell your decks?’
It really struck a chord with me as they were my escapism from the world at times. They were my babies that would signal the start of the weekend as I played on them before going out and finally signalled the end at some point Monday morning before returning to work for the week. Then in the middle of the week I would slap some new tunes on, acquired from the local vinyl stockists where I lived and start looking forward to the weekend for some more clubbing adventures.
I’ll be sad to see them go when that time finally arrives. I firmly believe in modern technology though and raise an eyebrow to anyone who holds onto vinyl and still thinks they will still cut it with the rest. I will be looking to embrace either Ableton or Traktor in the near future as my choice for getting to grips with music again. Yes it means no more beat matching, but lets you get on with manipulating your music and getting even more creative. If you don’t put in that extra effort, then yes I see the argument that you are taking away the talent that a DJ should bring to a club
Once again here is the link to Nick Stevenson’s post: Is there ever a time to sell your decks?

I don’t think I’ll ever get rid of mine. I mean, since I got my CDJ’s I’ve not really touched them but I got one out a couple of days ago as I’ve been ripping a load of old tunes to CD.
I don’t think I’d ever sell my vinyl as a) I’ve still got some amazing tunes that are worth keeping, b) the amount I’d get back on them wouldn’t be nearly worth the hassle of selling them and c) if I have vinyl, I may as well have something to play them on, even if they sit in a box on top of my wardrobe.
I also think DJ’ing with Ableton or Traktor is the most boring thing you could possibly watch in a club. I can understand it with Techno or something similar as you can layer several tunes on top of each other and get a good effect where as with trance the melodies would just clash and it would sound shit. PvD is about the only trance DJ who I think can get away with it without looking lazy but each to their own I guess.
Yeah I totally agree it can be boring to watch.
As I stated, I think you have to think about bringing something different with your performance if you take the Ableton and Traktor route. You have to make up for the fact that you will have free time on your hands as you shouldn’t need to monitor the beat-matching.
I also think DJ’ing with Ableton or Traktor is the most boring thing you could possibly watch in a club:
have u used traktor cos the sync isnt as good as ppl think. u still have to adjust it. and doing tht thru the vinyl/cdj looks as normal as with a cd/vinyl on the turntable.
The one advantage being NO burning of CD’s, the biggest bain of my life. nothing fills me with sorrow more thn knowing before a gig there CD’s to be burnt. so tedious and boring, with traktor tho. take my laptop and external HDD along to the club and we’re ready to go. No1 really has to see the laptop can be tucked away in a corner like my cd wallet woulda been. and only need to touch it to select tracks (There is a way to do this without even touching the laptop ala Zabiella, but not worked tht out yet)
Keep your 1210′s get traktor and use the 4 deck capabilities. will defo bring a new dimension to your sets.
