I’m going to state a shocking fact upfront right now. I haven’t voted this year…well not yet.
It’s not that I don’t want to support the hundreds of artists out there, but I just feel “Is it all worth it?” What good becomes of voting in the main players again?
As the final weeks approach to the close of voting we are being bombarded with the “Please vote for me!” Emails, status updates, tweets and videos. For many, they are going to make the Top 100 anyway. My guess is that it is just another bragging right and helps their agents get a better price the higher up they are.
Supporting New Talent
Don’t get me wrong, it is good for artists and managers to have goals and to achieve them, the poll has its uses in the industry. It just leaves me somewhat disillusioned about the scene though. This is down to my personal beliefs, what I set out to do by writing, and always have when I talk about music – Support up and coming artists.
Even in the early days of writing here, I mixed it up by supporting the big guns alongside the unknowns. I like seeing artists progress and get to the point that are being recognised for their work. The DJ Mag Top 100 DJs poll is a standard that artists like to achieve, but I think it is disillusioning for the scene, and not just the trance scene. For many EDM artists, it is just not attainable, their scene is too small meaning they can not complete with, trance, house and techno artists all getting their votes in.
For example; I know of some great hardcore DJs, but they’ll never in a month of Sundays be able to get into the Top 100. I’ll be surprised if any make it into the Top 200, unless Darren Styles had a fair run at it after his commercial success… Actually just looked and Kutski got in at 124 (if anyone is interested).
And there is the other thing…
Isn’t The DJ Mag Top 100 Poll Just A Popularity Contest?
DJs with the most votes get in the Top 100?
Yes.
Does it mean the they contributed to the scene in the last year?
It must do.
Did they revolutionise the scene?
Maybe… There are those who deservedly break through really quickly, but I think you’ll find those in 200th or 300th place are the ones really doing the groundwork. They are the ones changing the sound of trance as we know it and in later years are going to be fighting the fight for the title of Numero Uno.
Is It Worth Voting?
I think it is worth voting, but only if we do so in a way that encourages new talent and rewards them for their efforts. I dislike the fact that it is a popularity contest and I am thankful for sites such as TrancePodium who have developed their own Top 50 DJs poll. It is no different than DJ Mag yes, though it is specific to our genre, therefore it gives a better view about the affect that artists are having on the scene.
If I didn’t vote it would make me a heretic. Here is me saying support new talent, and then refusing to vote. It conflicts with my beliefs.
So, I’ve decided I’ll make a new rule for myself that is inline with my ethics. From this year on, I will vote for what I believe are talented artists which were not in the Top 100 the previous year, and primarily have never been in the Top 100 before. They will be the artists that I firmly believe have something special to offer our scene (even if it is not obvious to others).
Everyone starts somewhere, so I’m sure those in the Top 100 understand where the up and coming artists are coming from and they won’t mind missing my votes
If you are one of those Top 100, I tip my hat to you, you put the hard work and effort in and made it, congratulations to you. Hell, if you are reading this, thank you for making the scene what it is today!
The rest of you looking to reach those heavenly heights? Don’t dispair if you do not get voted in to the top on any contest. Concentrate on the now and be the best you can! I really can’t say anymore than that, because that is what counts for making people/fans vote in the future.
Who Am I Voting For…
Whilst writing this post I had plenty of time to think and my 5 votes will go as follows:
Ben Gold – A phenomenal DJ and producer that I have had the pleasure of seeing DJ years ago and more so recently. I hope many of you agree, he deserves to make the Top 100 this year.
Robert Vadney – An absolutely amazing producer. My only hope is he settles a little with keeping focus on the the euphoric banging trance that he produces so well in my view. I don’t expect him to appeal to everyone, all the more reason for the vote; because he is doing his own thing and has developed his own sound!
Fei-Fei – DJ, producer and record label owner. FEIDED has produced some killer sounds and established itself in less than a year that it had what it takes with download charts set ablaze. Fei-Fei is versatile and works really hard to please her fans. If you wanted a business case study of how to break into the EDM world, she was a role model to watch over the last few years.
Steve Anderson – Since I have been working on this blog, Steve has always been there working hard with releases, his label and collaborating with other artists. His passion for the music is embedded deep within, I haven’t found any artists who express it quite like him. I know he is serious about his career and I hope to see him up there.
Vic Light – Vic is a dear friend who I have known for a number of years. I wouldn’t be putting him in here unless I really thought he had what it takes (Vic, my reputation is on the line here endorsing buddies Haha!). He may not make the Top Whatever, but this is me believing in someone that many of you have not heard of – You have to start voting for them at some point.
Good luck to all five, I hope they have a fantastic future no matter where they end up in the poll.
Everyone else, get cracking, it could be you I’m voting for next year

Honestly,,this is a boring review / opinion
We just vote because 1)we have favourites 2)GOOSEBUMPS NEVER LIE
Anyway,I look at things that happened in a year before the poll started- what production / which dj sent chills down my spine,,and one who puts in work and interacts with fans
PS- I HAVE NO IDEA WHO THE PEOPLE HE Put in HIs top five are :/ geez,,lol
Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment (or two)
I agree about having favourites and goosebumps. As you mention, you analyse who you vote for. You are obviously not one of the sheep that I imagine aimlessly type in the same big names year after year
My whole point of voting this year was not to vote for the norm. I’ll be posting work from each artist this week as well.
Out of interest, who will/have you voted for?
Well,I know Ben Gold though
I would of hoped so
I do agree with your opinion; that is ‘under dog’ Dj’s should be voted for. But you gotta admit it is the big guys who got us to listen to these genres in the first place. Anyways great article and I will listen to your top 5, (Ben Gold is one of my favorites
).
They sure did, and it wouldn’t be where it is now if it wasn’t for them
Thanks for stopping by and Ben Gold FTW!
Hehe!
i voted for the witch ahm feifei the last year…too bad she recently lacks in t-rance
True,,i do think people shld vote for for what is relevant ,,so for this years poll,,people shld be looking t 2010 – 2011…..and on that thought I might puke to learn that somebody voted Guetta, the guy has just has just lost his marbles, fame has gotten into his head,,i miss the old guetta…i am not critising,,i am only airing my opinion
anyway,,i voted 1) Avicii-this guy is doing so well.i am speechless. +he is young…. 2) above and beyond 3) ferry corsten 4) calvin harris 5) armin van buuren these guys are mainly mainstream as you have noted…oh well..everybody feel free to also post ur votes,,, and i will also sample some of vic light
Thank you for including me in your top 5, Stuart.
You know how much I value your support and I hope I continue to do so for many years!
Your more than welcome, keep at it!
I agree with you and I also voted for a talented very good freind and DJ of mine he plays techno 2x per week also has a radio show now with number 112 mix came out few days ago. He has a label supports many new artists etc .. and he definitelly deserves my vote. He plays in the best techno club in Slovakia style simmilar to Toky (Rumenige), Boss, so hell yea he deserved it
but I am afraid my vote will be the only one there
and he is doing hard work for years now .. And it makes me mad when someone like David Guetta for ruining the scene gets a load of votes what is even worse he can compete with PVD, Armin, Ferry etc with people that really did something for the scene in any way and still do .. it makes me sad wehn I see Guetta above people that work in music industry for very long and very hard and he just comes up with some commercial crap and beng there he is .. should be removed from the list at any point as he can barely mix 2 tracks together ..
From the interviews I have seen of David Guetta he seems really clueless about anything other than he is churning out.
Stuart its true that by listening to big artists first we become fanatics of trance etc. But then after that we start to dwelve into it and listen whoever is producing good music. In my case guetta and later avb and tiesto introduced me to this awesome world. But now listening to vadney or say deadmau5, i have learnt how silly simplistic generic bass sound Guetta makes and i believe he should be blacklisted or something
I loved hearing trance in the 90s in the charts and that is what got me into going clubbing even though I was already listening to stuff like The Prodigy, old skool rave, some happy hardcore and dance music that made the charts.
And it is trance that brought me back down to the ground after some mad clubbing days in the noughties.
I sort of agree with what you said about it being for the most part, a popularity contest. I’m sure the majority of us reckon that simple due to how mainstream he has become, David Guetta will probably top this years lot after increasing his place year-upon-year. But i think for the majority, if the have voted for a well recognised DJ, it is mainly because they enjoy their music.
I voted for Avicii this year as my number 1 pick, simply for the music he is currently releasing and the impact he has had on the house music scene in the past year. And i’d love to see him be one of this year’s highest climbers.
I also voted for SHM, I haven’t been overly impressed with their latest release but I seen them live and they quite simply blew it away.
So, I think the people who care enough to vote, genuinely have an interest in this music scene and have taken time to think about their vote and why.
Great post. This is a great way to get people to vote.
Well the only reason I vote for Armin each year is that I DO NOT want Guetta to claim top spot. the other 4 artists I vote for are not in the top 100. Let’s be honest the people that vote for David Guetta are the people that follow him on facebook who have been asked to vote for him who generally don’t have any clue about electronic music. tbh they probs never even heard of DJ Mag, but theys till vote for him. This poll is a popularity contest. Something needs to change. It’s wrong. You might think i’m targeting Guetta here but I think the same about Tiesto. The only reason he’s still up there is because of his fame 10 years ago. If knowone heard of him 10 years ago, I don’t think anyone would vote for him now. I’m passionate about music and the artists that deserve recognition and all this poll is doing is hurting the scene. Music is music, Music is not a contest and this really needs to stop before it’s too late.
Is it not just a bit of fun? I think you’re reading in to it too much if I’m honest. At the end of the day, it raises the profile of dance music as a whole and every year it gets people excited about it. That can only be a good thing. We all hate David Guetta but whether he gets in the top 10 is beside the point, really.
To be honest my beef is not with Guetta, but more about sheep voting for the same old artists. I’d like to see some new faces get the recognition they deserve.
Thanks for commenting
LOL,,PEOPLE REALLYY MADDD AT GUETTA!! HAHA,,and could people mention their votes pliz
